 READING COUNTS INFORMATION Minimize

ACCELERATED READER – RENAISSANCE PLACE

Dear Parents or Guardians,

Students are required to accumulate 12 AR points for the trimester The books they choose must be books found on the Accelerated Reader list and should be a book on or near their Grade Equivalent.

Students will take a Star Reader Test to establish their Grade Equivalent score. This test will be taken at least twice (2) a quarter to establish new standards throughout the school year. On this report is listed a category labeled ZPD (Zone of proximal development). This indicates the student’s readability level and should be used to select their books. The ZPD is connected to the book’s ATOS scale. The ATOS can be found listed with the book’s information on the AR BookFinder web page (see below). Once you have found the book, double-click on the “book” and it will bring up the ATOS (book level) as well as other information concern that particular book.

The AR program scoring is different then the Reading Counts. In order for students to get credit for reading the book they must reach at least 60% on the book quizzes. Anything less then 60% and no points will be rewarded. Their total points will be based on their percentage scored on the book quiz: 100% full points rewarded, a 90% on book quizzes will net only 90% of the book points. Example: if a book is worth 10 points then 100% equals 10 points. If a student scored 90% on the book quiz, then only 9 points will be rewarded. It should also be noted that student have only one opportunity to pass a book quiz. If they fall below 60% they will receive no points and must move on to another book.

With the AR program is a website called “Renaissance Home Connect” it allows the parents and students to follow their progress. To access this site you need to have a user name and password. This information can be found on the Renaissance Home Connect–Dear Parent/Guardian letter that is also attached to this document. Be sure to enter the correct address. It is listed on the attached page just below the username / password.

  REQUIREMENTS  FOR ACCELERATED READER

1) To see if a book is on the AR list students can go online to http://www.arbookfind.com. You can search for book titles based on authors, topics, or titles of books. Just type what you want to search for in the blank field and click Go. You will then be able to sort your search results, select book titles to add to your AR BookBag, print a list of your search results, or start a new search.

2) Select a book and READ. Keep in mind to read it well. To get points you MUST PASS the quiz at 60% or better.

3) Once the students have completed reading a book they will be required to take a Reading Practice Quiz, Vocabulary Practice Quiz, and Literacy Skills Quiz. All three areas will count towards their Accelerated Reader grade. This test can be taken ONLY AT SCHOOL and must be pre-password approved before students take the tests.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me, phone: 483-2225 or email: rstrand@adrianschool.com.
